GUNTUR: Andhra Pradesh Governor Narayan Dutt Tiwari on Wednesday launched country’s first-ever free meal scheme for farmers on an experimental basis at Agriculture Market Yard in Guntur.

Addressing a large gathering of chilli growers at the market yard, the Governor said giving equal status to men and women at workplace was key to development of the country for which China and United States were examples for us to follow. The importance of chilli produced here was known world over as it was selling about 40 lakh quintals and probably no mixture of spices was without Guntur chillies, he observed.

“I have seen market yards in Brazil and Russia, but ours were no less professional in their functioning and could become better with such schemes for farmers,” Mr. Tiwari said. He went on to add that the recent Rs.60,000-crore loan waiver scheme announced by Finance Minister P. Chidambaram would benefit a large number of farmers in the State, as they would corner nearly Rs.10,000 crore out of it.

He called upon the farmers to concentrate on quality of production. He congratulated the YS. Rajasekhara Reddy Government for introducing several welfare schemes for farmers and wanted ryots to take advantage of excellent irrigation facilities, input subsidies to improve the agriculture production in the State.

Steam boilers

Congratulating market committee Chairman Lella Appi Reddy for designing the free-meal scheme, he said farmers, who come here from six districts to sell their produce, would benefit a lot out of this scheme.

He later gave away steam boilers for turmeric farmers of Duggirala and Poly dryers to chilli farmers of Durgi, sponsored by the Department of Horticulture.

Guntur MP Rayapati Sambasiva Rao, Prattipadu MLA Raavi Venkata Ramana, Guntur Mayor Kanna Nagaraju and ZP Chairperson Kuchipudi Vijaya were also present on the occasion.
