Plea for measures to protect beauty of beaches

Staff Reporter

“Construction activities are going on in close proximity to the ocean”

Nagercoil: The district administration and the Pollution Control Board should initiate urgent measures to safeguard the natural beauty of various beaches in the district.

The chairman of Indian National Trust for Arts and Cultural Heritage, R.S. Lal Mohan said that though 17 lakh domestic and international tourists have visited the land’s end in 2007 alone, the maintenance of the town and particularly the beach were much to be desired.

Factors such as open defecation, regular burning of plastics on the beach front and vandalising of the coast by the vested interests continued to scare the beauty of the beach.

He further said that though Kanyakumari was categorised as a national heritage site, it was not given its due importance.

Construction activities were going on in close proximity to the ocean, in clear violation of the Coastal Zone Regulation norms.

Due to poor solid waste management the beach was being littered with plastic bags and burning of such waste had been going on unchecked.

The tourists were unwittingly made to inhale this carcinogenic fume.

He appealed to the district administration not to allow burning of plastic bags in the area.

Coral reef formation

He also said that Kanyakumari had a 40,000-year-old coral reef formation of about 150 metere length and 10 meter width situated near Kamjrajar manimandapam.

The authorities concerned should take steps to protect the exposed coral reefs.
