HYDERABAD: Constant power cuts plunged his business into darkness but that crisis gave birth to a bright idea that is sure to bring smiles on the faces of housewives and the neighbourhood laundryman. Meet Tumma Ramesh, a small time tailor in a small village, who has created an iron box that functions using the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and reduces power bills drastically apart from ensuring safety.

It has many benefits compared to the conventional coal iron box or the electric one. The LPG iron box touches 120 Degrees centigrade within a minute and is shock-proof. “Pressing is now instantaneous and cheap,” says Ramesh, who by profession is a tailor. He has designed the box using bronze for the base of the box and a two-inch burner incorporated in it to provide heat. A heat-proof glass is placed on the top to watch the flame. Gas is provided through a small pipe that connects the burner and the cylinder.

“Power cuts ranging from 12 to 14 hours are regular in rural areas and my business was hitting since lot of my work depended on pressing. That gave me the idea of LPG iron box,” says this graduate from Khanapur village in Narsampet mandal of Warangal district. He says all it costs for pressing a pair of shirts is 15 paise and 60 pairs of dresses can be pressed using one kg gas that costs Rs. 35 in the market. Ramesh has also patented his product with the government’s Patent Office in Chennai and he got the patent certificate in November 2007. He says the product can be made available for Rs. 300 to Rs. 3,000 depending on the size and the need of the customer. He can be contacted on 98496-06652 and 98483-23116.
