Bangalore: “Onco-nursing needs patience, courage and service aptitude, apart from specialised knowledge in chemotherapy, radiation and onco-surgery. To create more awareness regarding this branch of nursing, the Onco-nurses national conference - 2008 has been organised,” said B.S. Ajai Kumar, chairman and chief executive officer of Health Care Global (HCG) Enterprises Ltd. The conference, first of its kind in the country, will be held on Friday at the NIMHANS Convention Centre. Speaking to presspersons via video conferencing from Mysore, Dr. Ajai Kumar said that onco-nursing was essential, as nurses should be competent to provide quality care to cancer patients while being aware of the new challenges in oncology. “Nurses should be physically and mentally strong to counsel patients and instil confidence in them. Through the conference, we hope to create an interactive platform to highlight the behaviour and biology of cancer that needs the attention of nurses,” he said. Ramesh S. Bilimagga, medical director of HCG and consultant radiation oncologist of the Bangalore Institute of Oncology, said that onco-nursing was important as nurses would have to address physical and psychological needs of cancer patients. Lt. Col. (Retd.) Nagamani K.S., nursing superintendent, HCG, spoke.
