Tributes to Arthur Rimbaud, Simone de Beauvoir Women who work to help the destitute to be honoured PUDUCHERRY: Alliance Francaise of Puducherry will celebrate this March in style with theatre, music, a photography exhibition and documentaries. The centre, during February, had organised a number of events, including a concert by French and Indian musicians. The Ambassador of France in India had visited the Union Territory last month. Celebrating the French festival on March 7, a play, ‘Hell and Illuminating’, would be staged to pay tribute to French poet Arthur Rimbaud. This is the festival’s 10th anniversary, which aims to take poetry to the masses. Depicting the significant moments of Rimbaud’s life, the play, to be staged at 6.30 p.m., oscillates between dreams and reality. It recounts three periods of the poet’s life — his youth, adolescence and the African period. Alliance will dedicate the International Women’s Day on March 8 to women working for the destitute. The programme, from 5.30 p.m. to 9 p.m., will kick-start with a documentary paying homage to Simone de Beauvoir, a philosopher of women’s freedom. The documentary, ‘One is not born a woman’, will seek to realise a portrait of Beauvoir through her work ‘The Second Sex’, touted as the starting point of modern feminism. This will be followed by a meeting with women who have worked to support the destitute. Consul-General of France in Pondicherry Joelle Rayet would participate in the meeting, in which several members of non-governmental organisations would share their experiences. A concert by the Puducherry Flute Quartet has been scheduled for 8 p.m. Parisian Jewellers and Indian princes will come alive at a photography exhibition from March 6 to 20 at the art gallery. Creations of famous jewellers will be on display at the exhibition. These creations were specifically made for Indian princes, including the Maharajas of Indore, Patiala, Nawanagar and Baroda. A glass painting on ‘The Life of Buddha’ would be on from March 20 to 30.
