Waiting for a new Kishore

Madhur Tankha

Unmatched talent: Kishore Kumar

New Delhi: Film-maker Nagesh Kukunoor is hunting for a singer whose voice bears some similarity to the legendary Kishore Kumar, whom he plans to immortalise in a film.

The film-maker, who is best known for his film “Hyderabad Blues”, is appearing on a show titled “K for Kishore” on Sony Entertainment Television these days in which the participants try to sing like the famous singer.

Stating that he is on “K for Kishore” for a purely selfish reason, Nagesh says: “I am not looking for a voice that sounds like Kishore because I don’t think any singer could even come close to having those qualities. I am looking for a voice that can express emotions like Kishore. My choice of that singer from among the contestants will not necessarily be the winner, but someone who I think suits my requirement.”

Admitting that he is a die-hard Kishore fan, Nagesh says he grew up listening to the legendary singer right from his school days. “I have always believed that if there is a God, his name is Kishore Kumar. In fact if you have seen my film ‘Goa to Bangkok’, you would have noticed that in the last scene with Shreyas Talpade which runs into the credits I have used Kishore Kumar’s song ‘Jaani o Jaani’ that was my tribute to him.”

Nagesh says it has been his dream to make a film on Kishore. “Perhaps the time wasn’t right or the money was not there. I will not talk much about the film until its formal announcement shortly. But yes it will be a musical with as many songs as possible. There is a huge team working on the research. As you know, almost every person in the film industry has a funny story or anecdote to tell about Kishore.”

Appreciating the high-quality singing abilities of the contestants in the show, Nagesh says they are a bunch of highly talented singers.
