Vangal gets a road and channel

Through manual labour under National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme

KARUR: A four km road stretch and a 3.5 km drainage channel near Vangal in Karur district have got a new lease of life after they were cleared of the obstructing wild growth through manual labour under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).

“Our generation has not seen this drainage channel connecting Vangal and Marigoundanpalayam, says Vangal Kuppuchipalayam panchayat president K. Velusamy. Not only the channel cleared of the accumulated silt but also the narrow stretch abutting it has been widened enough to allow passage of bullock carts and bigger vehicles.

“Previously we had to go in search of work. Now with the introduction of the scheme work is easily available. We earn Rs.80 a day but only a few of us who could not otherwise go to textile industry prefer to toil under the Sun,” rues a farm hand C. Maran of Vangal. Just two kilometres ahead, another pretty but useful work under the scheme was proceeding. A four km stretch of road that had long been given up as closed was coming alive with hundreds of workers manually engaged in jungle clearance and wild growth sectioning work. No more than two people could walk side-by-side on the particular link road between Vangal and Sevanthipalayam till a few days back.

While such good things are happening because of the scheme, the low wage structure is not helping to attract people even in rural areas of the industrialised district of Karur especially the youth.
