PUDUCHERRY: The influence of various social problems on Hindi short stories was discussed at the two-day seminar held by the Department of Hindi at the Pondicherry University on March 4 and 5. Eminent scholars from different parts of the country participated in the meet titled, “Contemporary Hindi Short Stories—A Review”. Vice-Chancellor J. A. K Tareen inaugurated the seminar. Renowned short story writer Ramdarash Mishra presented the key-note address. Topics pertaining to different social issues including problems faced by the deprived classes, women and minorities were discussed at the meet. The seminar also focussed on issues such as caste system, unemployment, economic inequality, exploitation, sufferings of the labourers and travails of the peasants. The stress and strain affecting the youth in the modern world as depicted by the Hindi short stories also found a place in the discussions, according to a release issued by the Department of Hindi. Prof. Krishna Murari Mishra highlighted the complexity of the contemporary reality and Prof. Aravindakshan stressed the need for analysing the Hindi short stories taking the prevailing scenario into account. Prof.Amarnath threw light on attempts made by certain political outfits to control literary organisations, the release said.
