Efforts on to achieve NREGS targets

Staff Reporter

Kakinada: East Godavari district stood first in the State in implementing the second phase of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) by creating 1.10 crore person-days by spending Rs 90 crores since the inception of the scheme.

By the end of this month, the number of families benefiting from the NREGS would have crossed 50,000, according to official sources.

Efforts are on to achieve the targets in the ongoing second phase of the scheme.

Collector M Subrahmanyam is personally monitoring the scheme along with other district officials to ensure that the district retains its lead in providing wage employment for at least 100 days in a year.

NREGS is to be expanded to all 594 districts in the country from the new financial year 2008-09.
