‘Global agreement will hit domestic arecanut market’

Correspondent

Sirsi: The domestic arecanut market will be hit hard when a global market agreement will come into effect by 2010, S.R. Rangamurthy, chairman of the Central Areca Marketing and Processing Cooperative (CAMPCO), has said.

Speaking to mediapersons at the CAMPCO regional office here on Wednesday, he said that CAMPCO was close to turn around this year after sustaining a loss of Rs. 37 crore seven years ago due to price crash. Mr. Rangamurthy said that CAMPCO had set a target to double its chocolate production to 10,000 metric tonnes at its full manufacturing capacity. It was encouraging farmers to grow cocoa as a supplementary crop in areca plantations, he added. CAMPCO had achieved a significant increase in sales and export of chocolates.

Mr. Rangamurthy called upon areca growers to come forward to grow more cocoa in their plantation which he said would be purchased by CAMPCO.
