Plea not to shift spice board office
Correspondent
Sirsi: The North Kanara District Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture has criticised the move to shift the Spice Board of India in Sirsi to somewhere outside the district.
Secretary of the Chamber V.S. Sonde, in a release here on Thursday, said that the move had upset the Chamber which has been asking for three more offices of the board for so many years. For the past four decades, the board office in Sirsi had been providing technical assistance, extension services and subsidy to spice growers in the district.
Western Ghats
The Western Ghats region is considered suitable for spice growing. The Sirsi office, being situated in the centre of the region, was catering to the needs of the growers the Chamber secretary reminded.
‘Put on hold’
The Chamber urged the chairman of the Spice Board of India to put on hold the move to shift the office.
Mr. Sonde said that teh Chamber had urged Ananthkumar Hegde, Canara MP, who was a nominated member of the Spice Board of India, to retain the office in Sirsi.
