Bangalore: The Kannada Book Authority is all set to submit a draft on the first comprehensive book policy to the Government by the month-end. Chairman of the KBA S. G. Siddaramaiah told The Hindu on Wednesday here that evolving a well-defined policy had become imperative for checking irregularities in book purchase and in regulating the duplication of publications from the government sponsored publishing agencies, including academies and universities. The KBA had entrusted the responsibility of preparing a draft policy to the noted scholar G. Ramakrishna in October. “Prof. Ramakrishna has prepared a comprehensive draft identifying problems in a range of inter-related areas such as literacy missions, existing libraries at primary school to college levels and public libraries right from gram panchayats to urban areas, quality of available books and the shortcomings and the alleged unethical methods being practised in the various book purchasing schemes. He has also suggested various corrective measures. The KBA will send a copy of the draft for obtaining the expert opinion of Jnanpith Award winner U.R. Ananthamurthy. An expert committee of the KBA will incorporate all valid suggestions and submit the draft to the Government,” Prof. Siddaramaiah said.
