PASSING RESOLUTIONS: Vellore Municipal Chairman P. Karthikeyan presiding over an urgent meeting of the council in Vellore on Thursday.

VELLORE: The Vellore Municipality has requested the Commissioner of Municipal Administration (CMA) to recommend to the State government to transfer the administration of the mofussil bus stand near the Selliamman Temple on Katpadi Road from the Vellore Local Planning Authority (VLPA) to the municipality.

The resolution was passed at an urgent meeting of the municipal council presided over by the municipal chairman P. Karthikeyan here on Thursday.

The bus stand, functioning in Officers’ Line, was shifted to the premises of the now defunct fruit processing unit of the erstwhile North Arcot District Cooperative Fruit Processing Society on May 24, 2005.

It was placed under the administrative control of the VLPA.

The municipality requested the government to fix a low price to purchase the land on which the bus stand exists (excluding buildings and machinery).

It also requested the government to hand over 10,682 sq ft from the 8.79-acre land on which the bus stand exists to the temple in exchange for the 13,516 sq ft it has already got for laying the approach road from the entrance of the bus stand and for accommodating the two-wheeler parking lot.

By another resolution, the council approved the estimates prepared by the municipality for Rs.2 crore for the first phase of the work on the construction of the new municipal office building on the premises of the erstwhile municipal travellers’ bungalow.

The resolution placed on record the fact that the State government has already allotted Rs.1.60 crore from the entertainment tax fund to the municipality for the purpose of constructing the municipal office building through G.O. no.22 dated February 14, 2008 of the Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply.

The municipality decided to spend Rs.40 lakh from its general funds to meet the balance expenditure.

The municipality will seek an allotment of Rs.99 lakh from the Tourism Development Fund for undertaking development works to cater to the needs of increasing flow of tourists, including pilgrims and medical tourists, to the district for visiting Sri Lakshmi Narayani (golden) temple in Sripuram, Sri Jalakanteswarar Temple, Vellore, Sri Balamurugan Temple, Ratnagiri, and Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore. The works for which the funds are being sought include construction of shops and a travellers’ bungalow on the southern side of the old bus stand, erection of high mast lights at important junctions, formation of parks, erection of artificial fountains and construction of walking paths and toilets in important places.
