TIRUPATTUR: Members of the Tamil Nadu Teachers Federation on Thursday protested in front of the Additional Elementary Education Office (AEEO), Kandili Division, near Tirupattur, charging that officials of the AEEO were involved in maladministration. As the members did not take prior permission from the police department, they were arrested and released in the afternoon. A cross-section of the protesters told The Hindu that the AEEO in the Kandili Union had two divisions. The limit of Division 1 office was from Vengalapuram to Anganadavalasai and the limit of the Division 2 office was from Kurumberi and adjoining areas. The AEEO governed all the primary and middle schools in the Kandili Union. The projects including the Activity Based Learning (ABL) and Active Learning Methodology (ALM) for the students of class VI up to class VIII were monitored and implemented by the AEEO. The AEEO was also entrusted with the responsibility of disbursing salaries to teachers of primary and middle schools in the union. Further, the AEEO also handled promotion and appointment-related matters. The federation had staged a series of protests on previous occasions. But the District Education Department had not taken any step to streamline the activities of AEEO. The protesters said that though the District Education Office had sent a formal letter to the AEEO about the protest, the members were immediately arrested on the pretext that no prior permission was sought from the police. No increment The protesters said that the teachers of primary and middle school in the union had not been given increment on reaching the selection grade. Promotion orders had not been issued to teachers who were eligible to become headmasters of primary and middle schools. Even the incentive payable to sanitary workers of primary and middle schools in the union had not been paid.
