Sports centres set up in 89 villages

Mandatory under 2006-07 scheme

VIRUDHUNAGAR: The district administration has constructed 66 community sports centres and 23 sports centres in schools in 89 village panchayats.
The local bodies were selected for implementation under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam in 2006-07.
Setting up sports centres in each village was one of the five mandatory works to be taken up under the scheme.
Stating that each community sports centre was set up at a cost of Rs.1 lakh and the school sports centres at a cost of Rs. 1.5 lakh each, Collector V. Chandrasekaran said in a statement.
Each community sports centres had facilities for badminton, volley ball and hockey.
Facilities for long jump, high jump, parallel bars and dumb bells had also been provided at the centres, the Collector said.
The government had allowed the local bodies to allocate up to Rs.10,000 from its funds to repair the facilities and buy additional play equipment, Mr. Chandrasekaran added.
