EC to hear claims of MDMK rebels on Monday

J. Venkatesan

New Delhi: The Election Commission will hear on Monday the claims of rival factions of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) to the name and flag. The splinter group led by L. Ganesan and Gingee Ramachandran had initially approached the Commission staking claim that their party was the original MDMK as demonstrated in the general council meeting held by them. They had produced video and other relevant documents in support of their claim.

In response to notice from the Commission, the MDMK leader Vaiko produced documents and other materials to show that the party led by him was the real and that it had expelled the rival claimants.

Mr. Vaiko had alleged that the dissidents had the backing of the ruling DMK. Commission sources said both the groups had been asked to present arguments through their counsel on March 10 and a final decision as to which group represents the real MDMK would be taken thereafter.
