Vaiko leads one-day fast at Villupuram

Special Correspondent

Protest against power situation

VILLUPURAM: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko along with a large number of partymen observed a day’s fast here on Thursday.

He told the reporters that the hunger strike was organised to protest against the dismal power situation, shortage of fertilizers, unremunerative prices offered to paddy growers and the inaction of the government to find solution to the Mullaperiyar dam and the Cauvery issues.

He said during the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime, the State generated 10,300 MW but under the present Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam rule, generation had dropped to 7,500 MW.

Mr. Vaiko said the government did not have valid reasons to explain the shortage. He attributed it to the ineffective administration of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.

The frequent and unscheduled power cuts had hit the people hard and curtailed the farm as well as industrial production, affecting lakhs of industrial and farm workers.

Mr. Vaiko said because the fertilizers were in short supply, the farmers had to source their requirements from the black market at higher prices. The Centre remained a mute spectator to the plight of the farmers from 2004 to 2007. Statistics revealed that 1.5 lakh farmers committed suicide in the country because of indebtedness.

The budgetary proposal to waive Rs 60,000 crore in farm loans would be best seen only as an election gambit.

Mr. Vaiko alleged that the State Government was trying to suppress the rights of the MDMK leaders but the voice of democracy could not be stifled.

He blamed both the Central and State Government for the inaction to protect the interests of the Tamil Nadu fishermen who were being targeted by the Sri Lankan Navy.

The Indian Navy did not seem to have provided any security to the fishermen. Condemning such an attitude, he shot off a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday, Mr. Vaiko said.
