BANGALORE: The State Government has decided to celebrate International Women’s Day on a grand scale this year by holding sports competitions, seminars and an exhibition. Events will commence on March 8 and will conclude on March 13. Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, P.K.H. Tharakan, adviser to the Governor, said this year the Women and Child Development Department will organise a “Walk for Women” from the Vidhana Soudha to the Gandhi Statue on M.G. Road on Saturday. The State-level programme of the International Women’s Day would be held at 10 a.m. at Bal Bhavan. The exhibition and sale of products manufactured by Stree Shakti groups and other entrepreneurs will be inaugurated on the same day at Bal Bhavan. Kittur Rani Chennamma awards will be conferred on six institutions, which have served with distinction in women’s development issues. Twelve women, who have contributed to the fields of women’s welfare, art, sports, education and literature, would be presented individual awards. A “Veera Mahile” (heroic woman) award will be presented. To encourage the Stree Shakti scheme cash prizes would be given for the three best groups at the State-level. The department will also lay the foundation stone for Mahila Bhavan, a resource and research centre, and a platform for sale of products of SHGs. A sports meet for women will be held on March 12 and 13 at Kanteerava Stadium.
