BANGALORE: To ensure early diagnosis and prevention of glaucoma, Minto Ophthalmic Hospital (MOH), attached to the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, is planning to conduct community clinics in rural areas.

Visit

Doctors from the Minto Ophthalmic Hospital will visit rural areas and conduct community clinics.

Patients diagnosed with glaucoma would be brought to the hospital in Bangalore for treatment, Medical Superintendent of the Hospital Sri Prakash told The Hindu on the occasion of the first World Glaucoma Day which was observed at Minto Ophthalmic Hospital on Thursday.

Dr. Prakash said they were also planning to train ophthalmologists from rural areas, who are not much exposed to glaucoma diagnosis. Even the paramedical ophthalmic assistants would be trained how to recognise glaucoma, he said.

Programme

In view of the Glaucoma Society’s decision to observe March 6 as World Glaucoma Day, doctors from the Minto Ophthalmic Hospital conducted a public awareness programme at the hospital. irector of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute G.T. Subash inaugurated the event.

While Professor of Ophthalmology T.K. Ramesh delivered a talk on “Glaucoma and its prevention,” Assistant Professor Nishat S. presented a report on Glaucoma clinic activities. The MOH on Thursday acquired a newer model of “field analyser,” equipment used for glaucoma diagnosis. The MOH has similar equipment of earlier models, Dr. Prakash said.
