Action against police officer sought

Staff Correspondent

The incident happened in Chintamani in Chickballapur district

Stir launched seeking suspension of the official

KOLAR: Political parties and other organisations have launched an agitation demanding suspension of a police officer for allegedly beating up two women at Chintamani in Chickballapur district.

The incident took place a couple of days ago when Circle Inspector of Police K.N. Ramesh allegedly beat an elderly fruit vendor. Mr. Ramesh reportedly asked the fruit vendor Maniyamma to remove her pushcart since it was obstructing traffic near KSRTC bus stand.

Even before the woman was removing her cart, Mr. Ramesh allegedly distributed the fruits free to passers-by and threw them on the road. Shocked by behaviour of the officer, Ms. Muniyamma reportedly objected to his action.

Ostensibly provoked by this, Mr. Ramesh allegedly started beating the woman. When Jagadeeshwari, Muniyamma’s daughter and Kolar district unit president of All India Democratic Women’s Association, intervened and questioned the officer, he beat up her too.

He reportedly not only abused with filthy language but also chased both the women in public and beat them. The town police have arrested Ms. Maniyamma on a complaint filed by Mr. Ramesh. In his complaint Mr. Ramesh alleged that Ms. Maniyamma has obstructed him while he was discharging his duties.

At a press conference organised at the government hospital in Chintamani, Ms. Jagadeeshwari alleged that the case was fabricated. It is a blatant violation of human rights, she said.

C. Gopinath, secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) taluk committee, said: “If the women have committed any offence, they should have been taken to the police station with the help of women police personnel. Mr. Ramesh’s complaint is a pre-emptive move to protect himself from allegations of excesses against women.”

Many organisations, including the CPI(M), Democratic Youth Federation of India, Students Federation of India, Janavadi Mahila Sanghatane and the Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha launched an indefinite dharna in front of Chintamani town police station from Tuesday. hey are demanding suspension of Mr. Ramesh.
