Take India to first place among nations, Minister urges students

Staff Reporter

“Youth constitute the majority of the population, considerable percentage of workforce”

Credibility in products, human capital, English knowledge are a few advantages

ERODE: Union Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan has urged students to take India to the first place in the comity of nations.

Delivering the convocation day address at the third convocation day celebrations at Nandha Engineering College here on Sunday, he told the students, “Your grandparents fought hard for the country’s Independence; your parents strived hard to nurture and grow it; and you must work to make India the first among the nations.”

The Minister explained to the youth that it was only they who could make the country first because they constituted the majority of the population and also constituted a considerable percentage of the workforce of the country.

“Earlier, a country’s wealth depended on its gold reserve and then oil. Now it is valued on the number of youth,” he said.

He further said that the country would become an economic powerhouse within the next decade, defying those countries that had painted a gloomy picture soon after Independence.

Referring to the oft-made comparison between China and India, Mr. Elangovan pointed out to the students that India enjoyed a few advantages, namely credibility in products and human capital and English knowledge.

He also compared the quality of democracy in India and other South Asian nations and urged students to be proud of Indian democracy.

College Chairman V. Shanmugan, said the placement record had been good, as 81 per cent of the students had been placed in good companies this year.

Principal V. K. Shanmuganathan welcomed the gathering. Secretary S.Thirumoorthi also participated.
