TAMBARAM: The Zonta Short Stay Home for destitute women in Manickam Nagar, Madambakkam, near Tambaram, was ransacked by a group of unidentified miscreants on Tuesday evening. This is the second such attack since its inauguration on December 6 last year.

According to May George, chairperson of the Zonta Resource Centre, the group barged into the Home and asked the eight women inmates to go out. It then damaged walls, window glasses, sewing machines, furniture, lights and fans among other objects. She also regretted that the response from Selaiyur police station was not up to the expectations.

The Home witnessed a similar attack within a fortnight of its inauguration. A section of the residents of the area allegedly damaged the compound wall and window panes protesting the presence of women living with HIV.

Ms.George said the voluntary organisation was earlier running the Home from a rented premises in Pallavaram. After purchasing a piece of a land in Madambakkam, it built the present premises.

“Short Stay Homes are an integral part of the Central Social Welfare Board to provide temporary accommodation to destitute women, especially those suffering from ailments. The women are provided vocational training and treatment for the ailments and are free to leave when they are confident enough to stand on their own legs,” said Ms.George.

Following the December 18 attack, personnel from Selaiyur, Chitlapakkam and Peerkankaranai police stations were instructed to provide security. While policemen from Chitlapakkam and Peerkankaranai promptly responded, those from Selaiyur were not regular, Ms.George complained.

Police officials said that a complaint had been received about Tuesday’s attack and it would be investigated.
