BANGALORE: India will soon be on a super fast data highway connected between Japan and United States. The Pacnet worldwide undersea cable which can carry data at a speed of 10.24 terabytes per second (tbps) from India to the U.S. that can be used by corporates and Internet Service Providers, according to Chief Executive Officer of the Pacnet William Barney here on Thursday at a press conference. The new cable system named “Unity” will address the broadband demand by providing capacity to sustain growth in data and internet traffic between the U.S. and Asia. Unity was expected to initially increase Trans-Pacific cable capacity by about 20 per cent. The new 10,000 km undersea Trans Pacific cable will provide connectivity between Chikura near Tokyo in Japan to Los Angeles and other West Coast network points. At Chikula, the unity will be seamlessly connected to other cable systems, further enhancing connectivity to Asia. The Pactel has taken Bharti Airtel in India, Global Transit in South Asia, Google, KDDI in Japan, Sing Tel, NEC Corporation and Tyco Communications as suppliers for the Unity project. This system will go on line in 2010, he added.
