This Day That Age
Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, United Nations Secretary-General, and long-time advocate of “quiet diplomacy” in the political field, stressed its importance in the economic sphere. Such “quiet consultations” might lead to “mutual adjustments and co-operation,” he said in an address prepared for the opening of the 14th session of the U.N. Economic Commission for Asia and Far East (ECAFE) on March 5 in Kuala Lumpur, that was presented by Mr. Phillipe de Seynes, Under-Secretary for Economic and Social Affairs, who represented him. The Secretary-General also referred in his address to “integration beyond national boundaries” and suggested that the growing importance of intra-regional trade is “perhaps a sign that the time may not be too far off” when this type of integration might be extended to Asia and the Far East. Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaya’s Prime Minister, in opening the conference, appealed to Asian nations to give a lead to the world in using the benefits of scientific progress for peace and prosperity. He said: Let us draw closer together, not for aggression but for mutual support and help. Let us renew our pledges to respect the integrity of other nations and their way of life and above all solve all our international problems by peaceful means alone.”
