LUCKNOW: Consequent to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s decision to revoke the ban on students’ union elections, the Samajwadi Party has threatened an agitation if “fake cases” against Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha activists are not withdrawn. The national in-charge of Samajwadi Party’s youth wings and the former Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh’s son, Akhilesh Yadav, alleged here on Thursday that more than 100 student leaders were jailed on fake charges during the party’s agitation against the ban imposed on union elections. Mr. Yadav said four student leaders in Allahabad were still in jail. He added that the student activists were arrested in Lucknow, Deoria, Ghazipur and other places. The Samajwadi MP from Kannauj said the Government should withdraw “fake cases” against the student leaders, or else the party would launch an agitation. Mr. Yadav attributed the withdrawal of the ban to the Samajwadi Party’s agitation. He said the Chief Minister was forced to reverse her decision in the face of the sustained protest. He said the student leaders who went to jail would be felicitated by Mr. Mulayam Singh soon. Mr. Yadav said a writ petition had been filed in the apex court challenging the Lyngdoh Committee’s recommendation on fixing the age limit for students contesting the union elections. He was of the view that a student enrolled in the university or college should not be allowed to contest the elections, irrespective of his age.
