Exhibition of Salim Ali’s works from today

Special Correspondent

Endangered species: The birds collected by Salim Ali will be on display in Mysore from Friday.

MYSORE: The original species of birds collected by late Dr. Salim Ali, doyen among ornithologists in India, will be displayed for the first time at the Regional Museum of Natural History (RMNH) here.

The exhibition will be on from Friday.

These species were collected from the erstwhile Mysore State when the “Birdman” was invited by the then Maharaja of Mysore to survey the birds of the State.

Survey

Dr. Salim Ali conducted a survey in the State during 1939-40 and this led to a greater awareness on environment and nature conservation. This resulted in the establishment of Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, according to B. Venugopal, scientist in-charge of RMNH.

In all, 55 species, including Yellow Throated Sparrow, Indian Treepie, Indian Roller, and Fairy Bluebird Yellow-legged Green Pigeon, will be on display. Some of these species are endangered owing to loss of habitat.

Each specimen collected by Dr. Ali during his field work in the State also has a tag with notes, which have been preserved for posterity.

Visuals

The RMNH will showcase many visuals on different phases of his work. D.N. Mathew, first Ph.D. student of Dr. Ali, will be the chief guest at the inaugural function.

S.A. Hussain, who is associated with the Bombay Natural History Society, and Neginhal, formerly with the Forest Department, will be present.

The exhibition will be open for a month on all days except Mondays and holidays.
