‘Budget lacks a capital thrust’

Staff Reporter

Various bodies critical of the emphasis on capital city development.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Thiruvananthapuram Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the State budget 2008 which lays emphasis on tourism and Information Technology.

A press release issued by the Chamber here on Thursday urged the State government to initiate steps to bring revenue and financial deficit under control by 2010-2011.

The budget, however, was silent on the holistic development of the State, the release stated.

Though the budget talked about smart city there was no mention about technocity, which was mentioned in the previous budget, it said.

Similarly, while a sum to the tune of Rs 25.7 crore had been allocated for the Vizhinjam port, there was no reference in the budget regarding the development of the roads in the capital, the airport and the constitution of a High Court Bench.

Federation of Residents’ Associations Thiruvanathapuram (FRAT) too welcomed the budget. In a release issued by Pattom Sasidharan Nair, president, the association welcomed the decision to raise the pension amount of workers in various sectors. However, the association also criticised the Finance Minister for his neglect of the capital city.

At a time when the members of the Thiruvananthapuram Bar Association were engaged in an indefinite Satyagraha to press for a High Court Bench here, the absence of any budgetary allocation for the bench is extremely disappointing, the release stated.

Meanwhile, the District Congress Committee (DCC) said the budget had neglected the development of the capital city.
