Delhi University asks all its colleges to fall in line

Parul Sharma

Instructions to follow the roster system for appointments

Colleges asked to coordinate with the university Liaison Officer before advertising the posts

‘It would help in ensuring that the mistakes of the past are not repeated’

NEW DELHI: To drive home the point that appointments for teaching and non-teaching posts ought to be done according to the roster system followed at Delhi University as per the directive of the Union Government, the administration has shot off a letter to all the constituent colleges to fall in line.

Principals

Through the letter issued to all Principals, Dean of Colleges Nayanjot Lahiri instructed them to coordinate with the Liaison Officer of the University, Pradeep Kumar, before advertising the posts in newspapers. In the letter, Prof. Lahiri wrote: “Some colleges have been issuing advertisements for filling up the teaching and non-teaching posts which inadvertently seem to be at variance with the roster with regard to particular positions. As a consequence of this, at a later stage, the situation becomes problematic for the colleges and the University.”

“In order that the vacancies, to be advertised, are in accordance with the roster, it is necessary on the part of the colleges to get the draft of the advertisement relating to vacancies verified by the Liaison Officer of the University before it is published in national dailies,” read the letter. Calling it a constructive move, Mr. Kumar on Thursday said it would help in ensuring that the mistakes of the past are not repeated.

“It is a very positive step. The roster has marked positions for categories like Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Physically Handicapped and Other Backward Classes. Some colleges indulge in roster jumping due to which a lot of backlog is created and the roster gets disturbed. This move will avoid any kind of overlapping and minimise the problems,” he said.

Mr. Kumar, a History lecturer at Zakir Husain College, was recently appointed Liaison Officer for matters relating to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the University.

Over a month ago, Prof. Lahiri had also written letters to the College Principals and Heads of Departments in respect of exempting differently-abled teachers from certain duties that cannot be performed by them, invigilation duty for examinations being a case in point.

“To prevent any humiliation towards differently-abled teachers, I would request that: 1) Visually handicapped teachers may be exempted from invigilation duty. 2) In the case of orthopaedically handicapped teachers where the disability is severe, they may also be exempted from invigilation duty. 3) If the disability is minor, such a duty may be assigned,” she wrote in the letter.
