Thiruvananthapuram: An underwater scientific device used for recording tidal activity has been reported missing off the coast of Anchuthengu from February 27. The Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) had placed the equipment at a depth of 15 metre about 1.5 km away from the coastline. The imported equipment costs Rs.17 lakh. It is equipped with a ‘wave or tide gauge’ and an ocean current measuring device. The equipment weighed over 150 kg and was anchored to the sea bed. It was part of a network of similar underwater devices placed by the CESS along the Thumpa-Anchuthengu coast. The police have registered a case of theft on the basis of a complaint filed by CESS scientist K.V. Thomas. The police said a trawling net could have dragged the device to some other location. They were also not ruling out the possibility of theft. Buoys marked the location of the submerged devices. Fishermen in the area were told in advance about the location of the devices, CESS officials said.
