Creative vacation awaits children

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Children will have a lot of options this summer vacation. A world of words and images awaits them. The Ernakulam Public Library has arranged workshops for children of different age groups.

The first workshop, for those in the 10-15 age group, will be a week-long one. It will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It aims at honing the finer skills of children. It will initiate them into the world of painting and drawing. They will be introduced to the classics in literature, film and art and also impart training in skills like public speaking.

The second workshop, for those above 15 years of age, will start on April 23 — World Book Day. This will be a 4-day workshop which will tackle an advanced level of art and literature appreciation. Those at the Ernakulam Public Library have plans to bring down writers, who would discuss the evolution of a popular story of theirs with the participants. The idea is to give an insight about creative writing to aspiring writers. Also, leading personalities from the film scene will interact with participants of the workshop. The organisers also have plans to make the children produce a 30-minute film in the camp and screen it.

The Kid’s Club of DC Books is organising a newspaper workshop this vacation. The workshop will take children through various phases involved in bringing out a newspaper. “The idea came from the good response evoked by the broadsheet News’n’More, the news daily being brought out by DC Books for children. The publication has news about children, written by them,” said Jaison P. Mathews of DC Books. Besides this, the Kid’s Club will have story-telling session and reading sessions and workshops on handicrafts. To add more colour to the vacation, the Orthic Creative Centre is planning two 5-day-workshops in painting.
