Tasty and nutritious: Participants at the cooking contest display their dishes in Puducherry on Friday. PUDUCHERRY: Women in Puducherry are celebrating their day by participating in events such as a nutritious cooking contest, and by signing up for self-defence training classes. Globally, March 8 is being celebrated as International Women’s Day. This year’s theme is ‘Shaping Progress’. As part of the celebrations, the Society for Rural and Urban Educational Development Organisation organised a cooking contest, which lays emphasis on nutrition, and a flower arrangement competition for women on Friday. “Through this (the cooking) contest we wanted to create awareness among women of the importance of nutrition. At present, most of the diseases are related to food. Nutritious food is not only less expensive, but is also healthy,” president of the society G. Sakthivel said. The participants came up with a variety of dishes for the contest. The dishes conjured up focussed on energy-rich food containing carbohydrates, protein and fat. Some of the participants came up innovative food ideas. As many as 78 women participated in the cooking contest, while 12 took part in the flower arrangement competition. Prizes were distributed to the winners on the occasion. Self-defence trainingFrom cooking, women could move on to self-defence training. The Puducherry Women’s Commission has organised classes in self-defence for women. Helping women to tackle various problems, the commission is involved in providing legal advice, conducting awareness campaigns, marriage registration camps and counselling for prevention of suicide. Persons interested in signing up for the classes can write to the Puducherry Women’s Commission at No. 20, 100 Feet Road, Natesan Nagar, Puducherry - 05. Meanwhile, municipal councillor of Thiruvalluvar Nagar S. Rajalakshmi distributed roses, sweets and greeting cards to 2,500 persons, including students, as part of the International Women’s Day. The greeting cards contained pictures of Mother Teresa, Saraswathi Subbiah, Prathiba Patil and Indira Gandhi.
