Officials seize 290 bags of PDS rice

Krishnagiri: Revenue officials seized 290 bags of rice worth Rs. 1.60 lakh meant for supply under the public distribution system, which was being smuggled in two lorries here on Thursday.
Acting on a tip-off, a team led by District Revenue Officer V. Mohanraj was conducting vehicle checks at Singiripalli near here when they intercepted a lorry with 140 bags of rice from Shoolagiri.
In another incident, a team was conducting vehicle checks on Thiruvannamalai Road when they intercepted a lorry with 150 bags of rice.
The lorries were on the way to Bangarapet for sale and subsequent polishing of rice in the open market.
Four persons were arrested in this connection. The lorries were handed over to the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation.
District supply officials also seized 65 bags of rice, which was hoarded in a godown at Sowlur village near Kaveripattinam.
The district administration will provide cash award to those who give information about smuggling of ration rice and other essential commodities under the Public Distribution System (PDS).
Similarly cash award will be given to those who give information about bogus family cards. The identity of the persons will not be disclosed.
The public may contact the District Revenue Officer on 94450 00909 to provide information on rice smuggling.
