Gen. Rodrigues stresses need for change in societal attitude towards woman

Emphasises on providing equal participation of women in every field of endeavour

Several projects launched by Chandigarh Administration for disadvantaged women

CHANDIGARH: Emphasising the need for strengthening partnerships and equal participation of women in every field of endeavour, Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator S.F. Rodrigues on Friday called for a mass movement to change societal attitudes and community practices vis-À-vis the fairer sex.

In a message on the occasion of International Women’s Day, he said the focus must be on creating a positive environment for empowerment of women.

Gen. Rodrigues said the principle of gender equality had been enshrined in the Constitution, yet unfortunately, even after 60 years of Independence, this segment of society is “facing a lot of hardships and are subjected to domestic violence, brutality, dowry deaths, discrimination at work places, economic hardships, female foeticide and lesser opportunities to develop their potential.”

He said the Chandigarh Administration had initiated many programmes to make women from disadvantaged sections economically independent and self-reliant. A responsive system had been evolved for training women and girls from weaker sections in different vocations and the Administration was shortly going to launch a vocational training programme for rural women by giving them infrastructural support and marketing facilities for their products.

He said the Chandigarh Administration had already launched a novel programme for reduction in the Maternal Mortality Rate and another programme for checking child abuse.
