NEW DELHI: In an apparent damage control measure after the Capital was ranked the 24th dirtiest city in the world, Mayor Arti Mehra on Friday said the Efficiency Improvement Centre for Sanitation near Vijay Ghat here was a “model project with integrated, efficient and effective garbage collection and proper transfer and disposal system”. In a statement, Ms. Mehra said: “This is the first attempt of its kind that comprehensively addresses the issue of solid waste management. It has set a precedent as it approaches the issue of waste disposal holistically.” Distinct advantageThe recently instated programme not only improves productivity but also promotes economy of operations, besides having the distinctively advantageous factor of sustainability build into it. The Mayor said the model project incorporated advanced waste handling and disposal methods to protect the environment and ensured implementation of the Municipal Solid Waste (Maintenance and Handling) Rule, 2000. “The Karol Bagh and Sadar Paharganj areas are highly congested with narrow lanes that pose great difficulty in efficient collection and transport of garbage. The private operators have now implemented a new system by which over 450 metric tonnes of garbage is collected per day that is then transported to the Efficiency Improvement Centre for Sanitation,” she added.
