BANGALORE: The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (Schedule Castes wing) has, in a memorandum, urged Governor Rameshwar Thakur to convene a meeting of the State-level Vigilance and Monitoring Committee under his chairmanship in compliance with the relevant rule (Rule 16) pertaining to the prevention of atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. MLC and head of the wing N. Manjunath told presspersons here on Friday that a delegation of the wing submitted a comprehensive memorandum to Mr. Thakur on Thursday. The former MLC Jalaja Naik, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, A.C. Srinivas and Ravikumar were the delegation, he added. According to the rule, the Government should convene a meeting of the committee twice a year. But the previous Government had failed to hold it despite requests though there were reports on increasing atrocities against Dalits in some parts of the State. Even Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Meira Kumar had written to the State Government stating that the Centre could not release its assistance under the Centrally-Sponsored Schemes as the minutes of the State-level Vigilance and Monitoring Committee had not been received despite reminders, he said.
