Telangana issue

The Congress has always been ambivalent on the issue of statehood to Telangana, supporting it when in the opposition and pushing it under the carpet when in power. It sowed the wind, and is now reaping the whirlwind.

If the Congress does not take steps to initiate the statehood process, it will have to face the Telangana voter with a betrayal tag around its neck. If it moves forward on the issue, the TRS will take credit for it.

The Telangana region has benefited tremendously after the formation of Andhra Pradesh. Had it become a state, such phenomenal growth would not have been possible. Politicians should impress upon the people the need to live in harmony, making the best use of available resources instead of raking up such a contentious issue solely for ulterior motives.

The editorial is a classic example of how far removed newspapers are from the situation on the ground. The struggle for Telangana has been the most peaceful, democratic and legitimate one with huge popular support. Today, if there is a fair referendum on the issue, a majority of the people of Telangana will opt for its statehood. Support for a Telangana state cuts across political parties. The observation that the TRS benefited not from any popular upsurge in support of Telangana in 2004 is unacceptable. What about the Karimnagar election in 2006 and the elections in 1971?
