“M.P. Govt. has failed to empower women”

Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh Women’s Congress president Shobha Oza on Friday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party-led State Government of failure to empower women under the existing “Women’s Policy”.

Ms. Oza said the policy, introduced in 2003, was gathering dust under the BJP regime.

Addressing media persons at the State Congress headquarters here on the eve of International Women’s Day, she said the Shivraj Singh Chauhan government had prepared a draft women’s policy on the basis of suggestions received at the Mahila Panchayat on July 30 last year but it had not been given a final shape.

Ms. Oza said the BJP government on the one hand kept announcing new schemes for women and on the other it had closed the “jhula ghar” scheme (crèches) started by the previous Congress regime.

It had even closed the Vijaya Raje insurance scheme and the rural Ayushmati scheme introduced by the former Chief Minister Sunderlal Patwa, which was continued by the previous Congress regime (1993- 2003).

“The Shivraj Singh government continuously proclaims its commitment to the cause of women,” Ms. Oza said, “but the truth is, however, to the contrary. There are only three women ministers in the State BJP government and the scenario is the same even when it comes to the appointment of chairpersons in the State-owned autonomous corporations.”
