Opposition stalls House in Bihar

Special Correspondent

PATNA: The entire Opposition in the Bihar Assembly stalled the proceedings on Friday morning, demanding that a House committee probe the alleged manhandling of a former CPI(ML) legislator at the Bhagalpur Central Jail.

CPI(ML) members sought admission of their adjournment motion charging that the party’s former legislator Mehboob Alam was beaten up by a police constable at the jail. Speaker Udai Narain Chaudhary disallowed the motion but his efforts to carry on with question hour went in vain.

Opposition legislators joined the slogan-shouting CPI(ML) members in the well. They demanded that the chair announce the constitution of a committee to probe the alleged manhandling.

With Power Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav restricting his commitment to making a statement on the issue later in the evening, the Chair had no option but to adjourn the House within 15 minutes of its commencement till noon.
