Manipal: H.S. Ballal, Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University, said on Friday that it was essential for consumers, especially women, to have some knowledge about jewellery and gems before purchasing them. He was presiding over the inaugural function of a workshop on “Gem and jewellery for women”, organised by the Manipal Institute of Jewellery Management, here. He said that although the Manipal Institute of Jewellery Management was one of the youngest institutions of Manipal University, it had made rapid strides. The university would give all support to the Institute, Prof. Ballal said. Inaugurating the workshop, the chairperson of Hostel Management Committee of Manipal University, Vasanthi Pai, said that women believed their jewellers. But recently she was told by jewellery experts that none of the jewellers was completely honest. “Even the most trusted jeweller will cheat a little,” she said and added that it was incumbent upon the consumers, including women, to know about gems and jewellery. PrizesIndira Ballal, wife of Prof. H.S. Ballal, gave away the prizes for students, who had scored high marks. Director of the institute M.M. Shanbhag welcomed the gathering. Divya Kapoor proposed a vote of thanks. Vice Chancellor of Manipal University Rajasekharan P. Warrier was present.
