Milk prices set to rise from March 10

CHENNAI: Milk supplied by Aavin will cost more from March 10, but will still be lower than the price of most private producers. A litre of toned milk will cost Rs.15.75, up from Rs.13.75.

The cost of the other varieties of milk and other products of the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation is being worked out.

Aavin is expected to make an announcement on Sunday. Electricity Minister Arcot N.Veeraswami and Dairy Development Minister U. Mathivanan, in a joint press meet said that milk producers were being given a hike of Rs. 4 per litre for buffalo milk and Rs.2 per litre for cow milk.

It has also been decided that milk with total fat content of 12.5 per cent (4.3 per cent fat and 8.2 Substance Non-Fat) will be accepted. Till now milk with total fat content of 13 per cent was only being accepted. These decisions were taken after the Ministers and officials led by Animal Husbandry Secretary Leena Nair held talks with representatives of milk producers.

Mr.Veeraswami said that even with the hike, the milk price in the State was lower than it was in most States. In Andhra Pradesh, toned milk was being sold at Rs.18 per litre, while in Maharashtra and Kerala it was Rs. 19, and in Delhi and West Bengal, it was Rs.20. Only in Karnataka was it close to the rate at which Tamil Nadu was now selling: Rs.16 per litre.

Aavin would still suffer a loss of Rs.21 crore despite the hike, Ms.Leena Nair said.
