Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan NEW DELHI: Upset with the latest round of political violence involving the Bharatiya Janata Party-Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the CPI(M) in Kannur district, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Saturday said he would convene an all-party meeting at the earliest to help restore peace in the area. Speaking to reporters in the capital during the lunch break of a CPI(M) Central Committee meeting, the Chief Minister said he too would cut short his visit and return to Kerala on Sunday morning. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan had left for Kerala on Saturday afternoon, midway through the Central Committee meeting, in view of the situation prevailing in Kannur. Disapproving of the role of his own party in the violence, Mr. Achuthanandan urged all concerned to settle matters amicably through dialogue. Describing the turn of events as unfortunate, he lamented: “If a breadwinner of a family is killed, the entire family is orphaned.” On returning to Kerala, the Chief Minister plans to visit the most troubled areas after consulting the Home Minister. Advani’s pleaMeanwhile, BJP leader L.K. Advani on Saturday sought immediate Central intervention in Kerala to “put an end to the unabated violence unleashed by CPI(M) storm troopers against BJP-RSS workers.” Mr. Advani raised the issue with Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil. According to a statement issued by the BJP, Mr. Patil assured him that the Centre had “taken cognisance of this mindless violence and would take steps to restore normalcy in the violence-torn district of Kerala.”
