‘Rangoli’ for a social cause

Staff Correspondent

Giving final touches: Rangoli artist Jyoti Ramesh Chindak with her drawings in Belgaum on Saturday.

Belgaum: International Women’s Day was observed here on Saturday in a different and meaningful manner. “Rangoli” artist Jyoti Chindak was at her creative best when she drew the images of women on the ground using colour powder, highlighting the issues they are facing.

At the Marathi Mandir Auditorium here, she created 30 images, each depicting the status of women in society.

Of the three sections in the exhibition, one depicted exploitation of women, atrocities on them and gender discrimination.

The second section highlighted women power and those who had excelled in social, economic, cultural, science and technology and space fields.

The third section depicted Rajasthani traditions.

Wife of Ramesh Chindak, Ms. Chindak, hails from a Marwadi family.

She shot to fame when she drew the biggest “rangoli” for the popular TV show, “Shabaash India”, on November 2, 2006. She told The Hindu that an art could be used as an effective tool to convey socially relevant messages or to draw attention towards various issues concerning society.

She used the “rangoli” form not only for the sake of art, but also for “expression”.

The topics included social evils such as female foeticide, female infanticide, dowry, and drug and alcohol addiction. The event featured the portraits of leaders and achievers such as Rani Channamma of Kittur, first woman President Pratibha Patil, Mother Teresa, and Kiran Bedi.
