WOMEN POWER: Women telling stories from epics at Nilakntheswar temple in Badapadar village of Khurda district on the International Women’s Day on Saturday.

BERHAMPUR: International Women’s Day was celebrated in Paralakhemundi on Saturday through a congregation of women leaders of remote areas of Gajapati district.

Over 1000 women activists took part in this interactive programme held under the leadership of Gajapati district Collector D. V. Swami. The participants were representatives of women Self Help Groups, anganwadi workers, female health workers and panchayat representatives. They were face to face to with officials and MLA Bharat Paika to interact on developmental programmes taken up for poor people and women in remote tribal areas. A quiz on the basic facts regarding safe child birth and Janani Surakshya Mission conducted by the Collector marked the beginning of the programme. The women who could answer correctly were awarded on the spot. A special audio visual presentation on the simple matters that can lead to reduction of mortality among the new born and the pregnant mothers was also part of the show. Another quiz on the sanitation at villages and the progress of sanitation campaign in the rural areas of the district was also held with the executive engineer of RWSS as quiz master. Sachala Karzi, a woman sarpanch, who had brought in remarkable changes in sanitation in her area, was honoured.

Mr Swami sighted the example of a phone call by the sarpanch of Mandimera panchayat to the Collector when 19 cases of gastro-enteritis were found at the village. A medical team was rushed to the area and hundreds could be saved.

BHUBANESWAR: The International Women’s Day was celebrated by the Government and non-government agencies.

The State-level function organised at the Exhibition Ground in the evening here by the Department of Women and Children’s Development was attended by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik who reiterated his government’s commitment to the Mission Shakti programme being implemented in the State for empowerment of women.

Earlier during the day, women’s organisation "We can-Orissa" in association with the WCD hosted a number of programmes at the Kalinga Stadium. Delegated from 30 districts formed human chains symbolising their solidarity and commitment to the cause of women’s emancipation at the grassroot level. A State-level painting show was organised.
