Major parties support strike

Governor sends communiqué to bar association

Lawyers not to oppose ‘sankalp samavesh’ of BJP

BERHAMPUR: Orissa Governor Murali Chandrakant Bhandare will hold discussions with a delegation of Ganjam bar association on March 12 regarding their continuing agitation for the establishment of a permanent bench of the High Court in Berhampur.

The lawyers of the bar have been on strike foe more than three months for this demand. Their talks with Chief Minister over the issue in the past had failed. President of the bar association, S.N.Rath said the Governor had sent a communiqué to him in which he asked the bar association to send a delegation of four members to hold discussions with him over the matter.

Meanwhile, district units of all major political parties, Ganjam chamber of commerce, labour unions and citizens’ organisations of the city extended their support to the continuing agitation of the lawyers at a meeting called up by the bar association in the city on Saturday evening.

This meeting was attended by BJD district president, Subash Moharana, Congress leader and former MLA, Siba Sahani, district president of the BJP, Bijay Samal, NCP leader and former MLA, Harihar Sahu and leaders of different organisations. All of them declared that they were with the lawyers in their agitation for establishment of a permanent bench of the High Court in the city. Mr Rath said they had decided to continue their agitation peacefully till their demand gets fulfilled. “Even if the gates of the Berhampur court get opened up by force all lawyers would continue to boycott the court,” he said.

The agitating lawyers also decided not to show any protest towards the State Ministers of the BJP who would be visiting the city on Sunday to take part in the ‘sankalp samavesh’ rally of the party. They decided not to oppose the visit of these leaders as they were on political visit. Recently Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had to face stiff opposition of lawyers during his visit to the city.
