CHAMARAJANAGAR: More than 22 huts were destroyed in a fire that broke out on Friday at Bommanahalli village in Gundlepet taluk. The police told The Hindu that more than 80 people had been rendered homeless in the blaze. The village people also lost their livestock. It is said that a flare of fire due to heavy wind caused the fire accident in the village. The fire was first noticed in a hut with thatched roof and within minutes the flames engulfed nearby huts in the village. With the fire spreading fast, the villagers were forced to abandon their homes and rush out without their belongings. The fire tender rushed to the spot and doused the fire. Most of the houses belong to Scheduled Castes. The zilla panchayat meeting held on Friday took a decision to give compensation and build the houses for the victims. The ZP has released Rs. 1.1 lakh as compensation to the victims, said CEO of ZP G. Jayaram. He said each family would receive Rs. 5,000.
