DAVANGERE: “Bharatiya Janata Party leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee made sincere efforts to provide 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and legislatures when he was Prime Minister,” Davangere MP G.M. Siddeshwar has said. Participating in the International Women’s Day celebrations here on Saturday, he claimed that Mr. Vajpayee’s attempts to get the Bill passed were thwarted by Opposition parties. He said women particularly those in rural areas, had become economically strong through self-help groups and reiterated the need to make women politically powerful and urged tabling of the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament. H.S. Shivashankar, MLC, spoke on the occasion.
