BELLARY: Work at the Government Taranath Ayurveda College and Hospital here came to a standstill for the second day in a row following a strike by students for better facilities. The college, which is one of the oldest in the State, is famous for its “panchakarma” treatment. As many as 150 people in and around the district visit the hospital every day. The students boycotted classes on Saturday and locked the gate of the hospital in protest against the failure of the Government and the management to provide better facilities for learning. Students’ association president Anand said that even after submitting several representations the Government had not taken steps to fill vacant posts of teaching and non-teaching staff, provide computers and ensure hygienic conditions in toilets, and rooms where the “panchakarma” treatment was given. ‘In vain’“The college lacks infrastructure to facilitate learning. Our pleas have been falling on deaf ears. The premises are also not kept clean. On several occasions, “abhyanga” (massage) has to be done by in-house surgeons when the only male masseuse (two posts are vacant) goes on leave,” said Anand. Filling up the posts of pharmacist, librarian, X-ray technician, trained nursing staff, establishment of a well-equipped emergency unit, dead bodies for conducting anatomical experiments and diagnostic equipment are among the demands put forth by students.
