NKC moots panel for management education

Special Correspondent

‘More weightage should be given to work experience at the time of admission’

‘Steps should be taken to ensure easier access to educational loans from banks’

GULBARGA: The National Knowledge Commission (NKC) has advocated the setting up of an autonomous Standing Committee for Management Education in the proposed Independent Regulatory Authority for Higher Education.

The NKC, in its recommendations submitted to the Union Government, had noted that management education had witnessed phenomenal growth in the past six years with more than 1,700 institutions offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The growth had also led to an exploitative environment with quality being compromised. The recommendations said that the NKC advocated good governance rather than the prevalent system of priori control being exercised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

Main role

The committee’s main role would be to exercise due diligence at the time of approving licences to grant degrees and diplomas by assessing the academic credibility and financial viability of the proposed institution.

The committees would also collate and communicate information on Management Educational Entities (MEEs), conduct demand forecasting of managerial manpower and develop and maintain a low-cost e-monitoring system. In another important recommendation, the NKC said that management education should be made available to a much wider student community by adopting a two-pronged approach.

More weightage should be given to work experience at the time of admission to overcome disadvantages faced by candidates who were not proficient in English. Steps should also be taken to ensure easier access to educational loans from banks.
