Hartal withdrawn following requests from temples State panel to meet in Kochi on Thursday THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Shiv Sena has withdrawn the 48-hour hartal call given by it from Monday demanding a High Court Bench in the capital city and against the alleged neglect of Thiruvananthapuram by the authorities. Shiv Sena district convener Peroorkada Harikumar said at a press conference here on Saturday that the hartal was being withdrawn following requests from many temple authorities and residents’ associations. “Many temples in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam where the hartal was called have festivals on March 10 and 11. These cannot be postponed. Also, there are CBSE, ICSE and university examinations on these days. So the executive committees of Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram that met here today decided to call off the hartal,” he said. However, the march and public meeting scheduled at Vanchiyoor junction at 5 p.m. on Tuesday will be held as announced. The State committee of Shiv Sena that will meet in Kochi on Thursday and Friday will chalk out a programme of agitation to press their demand for the High Court Bench in the city. It will be decided then when the hartal will be held. Asked whether a hartal would not adversely impact the common man, Shiv Sena officials said this hartal was in the interests of the common man and people would wholeheartedly participate in the same. “We do not call hartals for every other issue,” an official said. Asked why a hartal should be spread over two days, the official said the duration was in keeping with the gravity of the issue for which it was being called.
