Department plans tourists’ police wing Proposal to create 450 additional posts forwarded to Ministry PUDUCHERRY: The Police Department is awaiting clearance from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to create separate wings to look after crime and law and order. Director-General of Police A. S Khan told The Hindu here that the territorial administration had forwarded the proposal mooted by the Police Department to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to separate the force into crime and law and order, as in other States. “Two months ago, the territorial administration forwarded the proposal to MHA. We are expecting the necessary approval to come at any time,” Mr. Khan said. The government had also forwarded the proposal to create as many as 450 additional posts at different levels in the police force to the MHA for its approval, he said. The MHA had been approached to sanction 43 posts exclusively for the deployment in coastal police station at Karaikal, he said, adding that the marine station would be soon strengthened with the induction of three speed boats for patrolling along the coast. On the existing vacancies in the Special Branch, he said once the posts were sanctioned it would be filled. The department also planned to have a tourists’ police wing in the Union Territory on the lines of one in Goa, he said adding that a proposal in this regard would be soon submitted to the government for approval.
